i want to use substring function in DTS for transformation

hi all
i want to use substring function in DTS for transformation but its give me
run time error
my SQL statement for Source Table is
Select SUBSTRING(Field_name, 1, 2) from table_name
any help for how to use SUBSTRING in DTS
