Hi. I have been given the job of producing 5 reports from a SQL Server
2005 (beta) XML database. I barely have an idea what to do. There are
existing reports that don't work properly, produced by an employee who
will no longer be working for his manager (for various reasons, these
reports being one), the same manager who has tasked me to do these
reports for him. I thought I might start with the existing reports and
see if I can make them work. The existing reports are some kind of SQL
but I don't know what sort. Can someone identify what sort of SQL the
code is and point me to where I might learn about it, please? Following
is an example of one of the reports copied from Visual Studio:
--Purchase Orders--
SELECT
--document type
[Type],
--document id
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderNumber/BuyerOrderNumber)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS id,
--issue date
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderIssueDate)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS issue_date,
--agency name
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderParty/BuyerParty/Party/NameAddress/Name1)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS agency_name,
--department name
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderParty/ShipToParty/Party/NameAddress/Name2)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS department_name,
--buyer name
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderParty/BuyerParty/Party/OrderContact/Contact/ContactName)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS buyer_name,
--seller name
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderHeader/OrderParty/SellerParty/Party/NameAddress/Name1)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS seller_name,
--total
[Message].value('(/Order/OrderSummary/TotalAmount/MonetaryValue/MonetaryAmount)[1]',
'decimal(18,2)') AS total
FROM [test].[dbo].[TableXML]
WHERE Type='Purchase Order'
UNION ALL
--Purchase Orders Changes--
SELECT
--document type
[Type],
--document id
[Message].value('(/ChangeOrder/ChangeOrderHeader/ChangeOrderNumber/BuyerChangeOrderNumber)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS id,
--issue date
[Message].value('(/ChangeOrder/ChangeOrderHeader/ChangeOrderIssueDate)[1]',
'nvarchar(50)') AS issue_date,
--agency name
[Message].value('(/ChangeOrder/ChangeOrderHeader/BuyerParty/Party/NameAddress/Name1)[1]',

Thanking you now for your responses.

The T-SQL here uses the various methods supported by the new xml data type
in SQL Server 2005 (your "Message" column is obviously a column of type
"xml". Try http://msdn.microsoft.com/SQL/learn/...l/default.aspx as a
starting point for learning about this. It's also covered quite well in SQL
Server Books Online.

Thank you for your response. Yes, you are completely correct, the
"Message" column is a column of type "xml". Actually, I am in "SQL
Server Management Studio" and in the "Object Explorer" I see
"Databases", and under this there are "AdventureWorks (Offline)",
"AdventureWorksDW (Offline)", and "test", among others. Under "test" I
have one familiar thing and a whole bunch of (to me) unfamiliar things:
Familiar- Tables, Unfamiliar- Database Diagrams, Views, Synonyms,
Programmability, Service Broker, Storage and Security. Under "Tables" I
have "System Tables" and "dbo.TableXML". Under "dbo.TableXML" I have
Columns, Keys, Constraints, Triggers, Indexes and Statistics. And,
finally, under "Columns" I have "Type (char(50), null)" and
"Message(XML(.), null)". Most of this is an alien world to me. At this
stage, I still don't know if I will be able to produce the reports I
require.
Thank you again. At least now I know this is T-SQL.

I need to know how to deploy reports without Visual Studio
I have reviewed the available documentation and was unable to locate a
method to deploy reports outside of Visual Studio without instantiating
the web service. We have a package we would like to bundle with some
reports.
Does anyone know an easy way to deploy reports using an .rdl file? The only way to deploy reports is through the web service. (VS uses the web
service) Look for the method CreateReport. You can always use rs.exe and
create a simple script to do the deployment.

We are using an msi install which runs in the context of the local
system account. Do we have sufficient permission to run the rs utility?|||Non admins can run rs, but there is an issue on W2k that prevents this. XP
and W2k should be fine. However the local system account is an admin so you
should not see this issue (although I have not tried it and can't be 100%
sure). The problem is not a permission issue, but something with the
framework.
The user will need permission within RS. As long as local admins have
permission to publish to RS then you should have no issues.

a) Upload the rdl;
b) Create the db connection manually again within the Report Manager.

method to deploy reports outside of Visual Studio without instantiating
the web service.

As long as local admins have
permission to publish to RS then you should have no issues.

a) Upload the rdl;
b) Create the db connection manually again within the Report Manager.

i need to export a report with sub reports to excel
I need to export a report with sub reports to excel that they include all the information of both
i try that but the exported report not include all information and generate and some times present an error in the sub report space
yo necesito exportar un reporte con sub reportes a excel que incluyan toda la informacion de ambos
yo he intentado esto pero cuando exporto el reporte no incluye toda la informacion y algunas veces reporta un error .
Unfortunately this is just not supported with the RS Excel renderer.I need some serious help here
I had the evaluation version running, generated beautiful reports.
I upgraded my computer from Windows 2000 to 2003 and after a day or two
realized RS would not run, but it could have expired.
I upgraded my RS from the evaluation version to the release version,
choosing "upgrade". After the upgrade at first it wouldn't allow access to
the virtual dirs (eventually I hard-coded the Admin name/password in the
impersonation line in web.config which fixed it) and after that it
complained about unable to connect to the database. I tried the rsconfig
utility, then it complained about unable to decrypt a key pair and it
suggested restoring the default, which of course I did not have (it really
surprised me there).
I un-installed RS and started a fresh install. Now it says "The edition of
the Report Server Database is not supported on the edition of SQL Server
2000 you have chosen".
Both SQL 2000 and RS are Enterprise, and the evaluation was quite happy
using my SQL Server version (my machine was still Win 2000 though).
I have been fighting this install for about 7 hours now (on a Sunday),
googled, newsgroups, used bad language, etc, etc.
I am (or was) going to demo some (beautiful) reports to a client tomorrow.Do you have SP3a installed on your SQL2K enterprise?

I had SP3 and upgraded to SP3a yesterday as well. What is RS looking at when
it decides that this is the wrong version?
I guess I can backup all databases and re-install SQL Server if you think
that should do it. I gave that a thought already, but then it came to mind
what if it is something else and I went through that exercise for nothing.
Thanks for your ideas,
Chris.

only, you need a hotfix for SQL Server. Seems strange that SQL Server needs
it but only on 2003 but there you are. It is in the installation notes for
the install. Besides SP3a you need hotfix 859.
Your situation is a bit different. Only RS is on 2003 and your SQL Server is
still on 2000 so it seems like you wouldn't need the hotfix but you are
accessing it from Windows 2003 so maybe that is the key point. In my case
SQL Server and RS are both on Windows 2003.
In any case, it won't hurt anything and it might fix your problem so I
suggest installing the hotfix and see if that helps.
Hope that helps.

I have both SQL Server and RS running on the same 2003 machine, upgraded
from Win 2000 to 2003.
I am now attempting to locate hotfix 859, if you know the URL drop it here.
Thanks.

things I had to do different under 2003 Server.
1. Hotfix 859
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/RSUIREF/htm/f1_rsc_installation_v1_036u.asp
2. Configure server with application server, asp.net (two distinct
activities). Seems if this was an issue you would get a different error
message
3. I selected built-in account. Two choices: network and system. It defaults
to network. I wanted system (which is how my previous configurations were
configured).
Other than these my installation went smoothly but then I had a clean
install of Windows 2003 Advanced Server and SQL Server Enterprise.
What do you get when you do a select @.@.version? I get this:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.859 (Intel X86) Sep 18 2003 12:53:45

where yours says "Enterprise" mine says "Developer". It was installed close
to 3 years ago and I could swear by it that it was the Enterprise. The
evaluation version was happy, what a shame the release is not happy.
Bruce, thanks for your help.
Now I am sitting here with the Enterprise Edition CD in my hand, wondering
what will happen if I install it over the Developers.
I am going to post this question in the SQL Server newsgroup as well, if you
know the answer though, drop it here. Thanks again.

enterprise. Developer has the same features as enterprise so it is easy to
not know, that is why I had you check. I had developer and went to
enterprise but darn if I can remember if I had to unistall/reinstall or if I
could upgrade. Good news is that the problem is solved. Simple once you know
the solution <g>.

Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition on Windows

where yours says "Enterprise" mine says "Developer".

I need help please
Hello,
I started yesterday working with reporting services to get done some complex reports but I've encountered a lot troubles.
For example, I created one report and set both with and height for the body, then added one rectangle and inside of it, I dragged a Chart. Till then everything looked fine, but when I viewed the preview, my report is four page lenth and the charts appears on page 4 !!!
I've read in the newsgroups something about checking the vale of the Report.PageWith against the Body.Width, but WHERE CAN I FIND THE REPORT.PAGEWITDH ? is it withing the VS IDE '
Also, how can I add a "horizontal total" in a matrix '
I have the following layout for a matrix:
-- State (columns )
Month (rows) ... Units sold
My dataset returns these three fields
and I want something like ...
-- State (columns ) , Total Units
Month (rows) ... Units sold ...... , total units sold by month
My task is to create several reporting and each one will have several charts, lists and matrix.
Thanks
CesarSelect "Report" in the property browser. There would be PageSize property in
Layout category
Quoting from Books Online (
ms-help://MS.RSBOL80.1033/RSCREATE/htm/rcr_creating_structure_objects_v1_7vi
0.htm )
To add a subtotal to a matrix, add a subtotal to an individual group within
the matrix. Groups do not have subtotals by default. To add a subtotal to a
group, right-click the group column or row header and then click Subtotal.
This will open a new header for the subtotal. Reporting Services will
calculate the subtotal based on the aggregate in the data cell for the
group.
